Sailing in circles

I was sailing in a small boat and I was with my sister, ex or a friend. We were going in circles because the wind was blowing and pushing us to go round and round in the rough waves. Then I saw friends pass by and shouting something at us. Then I thought that I have to turn the sails but wasn't sure how. Finally I got the boat to go forward.
